Cisco Team Leader Challenge Simulation

The Cisco Team Leader Challenge Simulation was designed to assess the mental and skill readiness of Cisco managers/leaders against Cisco’s newly launched People Leader Commitments and provide real-world scenario practice to help highlight their strengths and areas of opportunity

Why?

Assess the current mindset and skillset of leaders and potential leaders against a new leadership model

  • The simulation allowed participants to create a snapshot of their current leadership mindset and skills using real-world situations

  • This system dynamics-based classroom simulation was part of an overall leadership assessment and learning journey aligned to Cisco's goal of creating the best teams and leaders in the world

  • The results of the simulation enabled Cisco to provide targeted development to leaders and make decisions about those desiring to be leaders

Desired Impact

Helped Cisco drive its desired shift towards a new strengths-based leadership model

  • The simulation platform gave leaders and potential leaders a report showing their strengths and gaps as compared against Cisco's People Leader Commitments (strengths-based leadership model)

  • These results provided the Leadership and Team Intelligence team with metrics to develop focused leadership training and track Cisco's progress towards overall leadership alignment with the People Leader Commitments

  • Participants used their results to create strengths-based individualized development plans  with their upline leaders and coaches

Classroom-based System Dynamics Simulation

The one-day simulation was classroom-based and built on a system dynamics model, meaning every time a participant played the simulation it was a different experience and each response created a ripple effect throughout the story.

Participants were seated in groups of four but worked independently on their simulations using a web-based interface and the following physical materials:

  • Company “badge”

  • Fictitious company and client org charts

  • Team Member character cards

  • Team project cards

  • Reflection guide

  • Ear buds to watch in-sim videos
